Today’s free book is Murder On Ice by Alina Adams
I don’t know if my first book, Sex, Murder & A Double Latte would have been published if Alina Adams hadn’t been kind enough to take a look at it and give me her notes.
For those who don’t know, requesting that a published author read your unpublished hopefully-debut-novel is a big ask. Because authors are asked to read things All. The. Time. and honestly we only have so much time. But Alina was and is a friend. I knew her before I knew I wanted to write. I was there when she got her first book contract for a regency romance novel. I remember when she got her first job in television and then went on to work as a researcher, writer and producer for ABC Sports, then on to ESPN, NBC and Lifetime. I remember the first time I saw her books on a front table at a bookstore, the first time I saw her books being read on TV by Soap Opera characters on two of the shows she had gone on to work for (As The World Turns, Guiding Light…I believe All My Children and One Life To Live came later). And I remember when those same books made the New York Times bestsellers list.
Alina has always inspired me and she’s taught me the importance of both perseverance and creativity, not just in the act of writing but in the way authors handle their careers.
And then on top of all of that, she’s an amazing talent. Her characters are always unique, relatable and multilayered. Her plotting and pacing spot on. Her writing draws on both professional and personal experiences. And as an immigrant born in Odessa when it was part of the USSR and a fluent Russian speaker, the experiences she draws from are fascinating.
Perhaps more importantly, her books are So. Much. Fun!
Her mysteries, her romances, her family sagas set both here and in Russia, her nonfiction, all of it is just a pleasure to read.
In other words, you really need to grab today’s freebie, Murder On Ice. Here’s the back cover copy/synopsis:
At the World Figure Skating Championships, the Ladies’ Gold medal goes to Russia’s dour Xenia Trubin over America’s perky Erin Simpson thanks to the vote of one judge. Who then promptly turns up dead.
Who killed Silvana Potenza? A skater? A coach? A fan? An official? A parent?
It’s up to Bex Levy, intrepid television researcher, to figure everything out before the end of the competition, or lose her job - and maybe even her life...
